Portfolio of Works
Landscape painting is at the core of my practice. I take photographs and sketch outdoors, using them as a starting point for larger works created in my studio. No digital or mechanical aids, no projectors, and certainly no artificial intelligence. Everything in my studio is handmade, from the substrate to the finished work. Works are created on duck cotton canvas, linen, and cradled wood panels, all made in-house. Oil paint is my primary medium; some abstract works begin in acrylics and are finished in oils, and some are mixed media.
Smaller works are often painted en plein air on linen, canvas, and wood panels.
Abstract paintings are studio-based and often derive from studies done on location. Given that all my canvases are custom-built pieces, I have the opportunity to create on a large scale. My abstract work is often inspired by my poetry, a line, a verse, a metaphor that becomes an area of exploration. Some works focus on surface light and reflection, such as the paintings in The River Speaks Collection. Others evolve in the creative process with poetry as the guiding influence, a synthesis of language to seamlessly create.
My small works collection is a mix of plein air and studio-based studies, created from photographs and sketches. Works are created on linen, canvas, and wood panels.
These paintings are readily available for sale from Michael Heffernan Art Studio.
